Abstract
In the production of xylose, vegetable material containing hemicelluloses, e.g. fir chips, beechwood chips, chestnut wood residue after tannin extraction, bagane, is pressed to reduce its moisture content to below 45%, and is then subjected in a closed p vennel, e.g. a continuous digester, to the action of no more sulphur dioxide solution than it can completely absorb, the treatment being effected at 60 DEG to 130 DEG C., for from 1 to 6 hours, whreafter the material is pressed to yield a solution of high xylose concentration from which xylose may be crystallized. The pressed material is washed with water or dilute xylose solution from a second wash and pressed again to obtain a liquid to which sulphur dioxide may be added to prepare a solution for treating a fresh batch of vegetable material.
