[Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] A method of creasing and/or cutting cardboard or the like comprises making an arcuate forme by shaping a sheet of plywood, other non-metallic bendable material or sheet metal for fitting to a positively-driven roller, and fixing to the shaped sheet lengths of rule, in the case of non-metallic sheets by slotting the rule below the cutting edge, slitting the sheet along the contour of the lines of creasing or severance, and setting therein the rules by pressing the protuberant portions thereof into the slits, and in the case of metal sheets by bending the rules to an angle section, slotting the limbs of the rules, below the cutting edge in the case of the vertical limbs, and securing the rules to the sheet by spot-welding the horizontal flanges thereto, detachably securing the forme to the roller, and feeding a blank to be treated between the roller and an impression roller. The forme consists of an arcuate plywood base B, Fig. 3, having slots 22 into which fit protruding portions of a steel creasing rule 21 bent into a corresponding shape. Alternatively, the base and rule may be of alloy steel, the rule 21, Fig. 5, being of anglesection and slotted at 213 to facilitate bending and spot-welded to the base. The forme is secured to a cylinder 20, Fig. 11, co-operating with an impression 'cylinder 27 to which is fixed an arcuate sheathing of soft metal. Sheets are fed from a pile 51 on a table 38 beneath gate plates 49 adjustable by screws 50 to allow one sheet at a time to pass below them to feed rollers 421, 422, whose nip is adjustable by screws 53, and thence to the nip between the cylinders 20, 27 and to a delivery table 40. The impression cylinder 27 is carried on arms 33 pivoted at one end to end frames 32, the free end of each arm resting on an eccentric 34 rotatable by a spindle 35 having a squared portion for the reception of a key, to adjust the nip between the cylinders 20, 27 according to the thickness of the sheets. The forme is secured at one end to the cylinder 20, Figs. 7 and 9, by eyes on the forme-engaging hook bolts 23 carried by brackets 202. The other end of the forme is secured to the cylinder by screw pegs 217 engaging holes in a block 203 on the cylinder, and a clamping plate 218, which can be locked in position by a plurality of pivoted levers 24 having bosses 241 and being retained in being position by spring-pressed balls 242 engaging in recesses in the bosses.
