Abstract

922,515. Colour television tubes. TECHNICOLOUR Ltd. Aug. 18, 1961 [Aug. 7, 1960], No. 19937/60. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] A cathode-ray tube for use in a colour television display system (see Group XL (b)) comprises three electron guns 12R, 12G, 12B and associated control and focusing means 14, 15, 16, three discrete target areas 18R, 18G, 18B over which the electron beams from the guns are deflected in the line direction only by electrostatic plates 19 or electromagnetic coils (not shown), and a spherical optical reflector 21 having a central oval aperture 24 to allow the beams to reach the target areas. Individual pairs of deflection plates 20 are provided to permit each beam to be positioned accurately on to the corresponding target area. The target areas, which comprise either phosphors chosen so as to produce respectively red, green and blue light directly or phosphors producing white light operated in conjunction with optical colour filters, are formed on a metallic plate 19 which is sealed into the envelope wall of the tube so as to be exposed on its outer side to the ambient air for cooling. Modifications are briefly described, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), in which the optical reflector is disposed outside the tube and the tube target assembly is inclined at an angle to the electron beam axis so that emitted light is projected to the reflector through a side wall of the tube.
