Abstract

One mole of one or more dimethylolatable monophenols is condensed in alkali at 20 DEG -80 DEG C. with one to two mole of formaldehyde, and the isolated product reacted, in steps or all at once, at above 100 DEG C., preferably 120 DEG -140 DEG C., in the melt, with 0,5 to 0,75 mole of a mixture containing an alkyl phenol having at least five carbon atoms in the alkyl groups and a hydroxybenzene carboxylic acid in the molar ratio of 1:1 to 1:2,5. In the first step, phenol, o-, p-, or mixed cresols, chlorophenols, or methoxyphenols may be used, o-cresol being preferred. Concentrated aqueous alkali metal hydroxide is used as catalyst, in amount approximately equivalent to, or slightly in excess over the phenolic hydroxyl groups. 40 DEG -60 DEG C. is the preferred reaction temperature. The reaction mixture is then neutralized with, e.g. HCl or H2SO4, and the product separated by decantation, the mother liquor being extracted with ether or butanone 2 to yield more product, if desired. The alkyl phenol in the second step has 5-15, preferably 8-12, alkyl carbon atoms, preferably in one group. Salicyclic acid is preferred, cresotic, halogenated salicyclic or p-hydroxybenzoic also being suitable. Any alkyl phenol which steam-distils off during the reaction is returned, and excess may be removed at the end by steam-distillation. Alternatively, all four components may be reacted in acid medium at 90 DEG -110 DEG C. for 5-20 hours. To speed the reaction, HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4, oxalic, formic, acetic or lactic acid may be added to augment the acidity of the hydroxy benzene carboxylic acids, and any inorganic acid added is removed from the product. The resins are soluble in many alcohols and esters. The resins are used with basic dyestuffs (Auramine, Rhodamine B, Crystal Violet, Victoria Blue, Malachite Green, Astra Blue6, Maxilone Blue RL) to make flexographic inks with low-boiling solvents (EtOH, MeOH), or ball-pen or ink-pad inks with high-boiling solvents (benzyl alcohol; 1,2-propylene glycol; dipropylene glycol; di- or tri-ethylene glycol; diethylene glycol monomethyl ether or di- or tri-acetate or lactate; glycerine di- or tri-acetate). Ink-pad inks contain about 10 parts dye or a salt thereof to about 90 parts resin-solvent mixture, ball-pen inks 20 to 80.
