Abstract

Flame proofing agents and cross-linking initiators for resins and foams comprise phosphorus-containing polyols of formula <FORM:0922198/IV(a)/1> where R, R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or alkyl, alkenyl, haloalkenyl or haloalkyl radicals containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms between them, at least one being haloalkyl or haloalkenyl, x is a number from 1 to 8 and Y is hydrogen or <FORM:0922198/IV(a)/2> (For preparation see Group IV(b)). Urethane foams may be prepared by reacting the polyols with isocyanates followed by simultaneous or stepwise foaming by internal development of CO2 and cross-linking of the isocyanate-modified phosphorus compound, or by means of a blowing agent. Epoxy resins and foams may be similarly prepared using the phosphorus compound as initiator. Reference is also made to the modification of silane monomers and silicone resins, and to polyester synthesis. In Example 9 a resin is prepared by carrying a solution of 3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexylmethyl 3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexanecarboxylate and a 3-chloro-1,2-epoxypropane adduct of phosphoric acid in the presence of BF3/C2H5NH2 catalyst.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0922198/IV(a)/1> where R, R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or alkyl, alkenyl, haloalkenyl or haloalkyl radicals containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms between them, at least one being haloalkyl or haloalkenyl, x is a number from 1 to 8 and Y is hydrogen or <FORM:0922198/IV(a)/2> They may be prepared by reacting at least one aliphatic haloepoxide having 3 to 10 carbon atoms with a phosphoric or phosphorous acid at 0-200 DEG C. in a ratio of 2 to 24 moles of haloepoxide per mole of phosphorous acid or 3 to 24 moles of haloepoxide per mole of phosphoric acid. A solvent may be used. Suitable phosphoric and phosphorous acids include the ortho, pyro, meta and hypo forms and may be anhydrous or in aqueous solution. The products act as pesticides and as flameproofing agents and cross-linking initiators for resins and foams (see Groups IV(a) and V).ALSO:Flame proofing agents and cross-linking initiators for resins and foams comprise phosphorus-containing polyols of formula <FORM:0922198/V/1> where R, R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or alkyl, alkenyl, haloalkenyl or haloalkyl radicals containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms between them, at least one being halcalkyl or haloalkenyl, x is a number from 1 to 8 and Y is hydrogen or <FORM:0922198/V/2> (For preparation see Group IV(b)).
