Apparatus for manufacturing chipboard from heaped materials such as wood chips mixed with a settable synthetic resin binding agent has a charging station a consisting of three charging machines a 1 , a 2 , as under which passes conveyer b driven so that supporting metal plates for the materal first advance by the length of one plate, then reverse for the length of a plate and finally conveyed by the length of two plates. The individual plates thus pass three times underneath each charging machine and so are charged with three three-ply layers, two outer and one inner. If chipboard is to be manufactured with one or two-ply outer layers the supply of chips to charging machines a 1 , as may be suitably interrupted during the motions. The chip cakes are then premoulded in preliminary press c and compacted in press h, which may be a multilayer press. The finished chipboards are discharged at K and the supporting plates returned to charging station a via transverse conveyer m.
