921,490. Electric selective signalling systems. L. OERTLING Ltd. Nov. 6, 1961 [Nov. 4, 1960], No. 38050/60. Class 40 (1). In a weighing arrangement, Fig. 1, a first defraction grating 22 is attached to a pan support 15, pivoted so as to remain vertical, a second defraction grating 18 is fixed in front of a light source 19, 21, and the Moire fringes produced as the balance beam moves are counted to effect fine weighing. In operation the unknown weight is placed in the left-hand pan and approximately balanced by weights on the right-hand pan. After the beam has come to rest in its equilibrium position it is moved back to its horizontal position, by means not shown, and the Moire fringes produced during this movement are detected by a photo-cell 24 and counted. Arrival of the beam in its horizontal position is detected by a further photo-electric cell 28 whose output is used to stop the counting. In order to maintain the distance between the two gratings constant a cylindrical defraction grating rigidly fixed to the balance beam could be used in place of the flat grating attached to the pan support, or alternatively, the planes of the gratings could be arranged to be parallel to the plane in which the beam moves (Fig. 5, not shown).
