Abstract
921,414. Coating elongated core elements with plastics material. A. M. ANDERSON. June 17, 1959 [March, 19, 1958], No. 8792/58. Class 87(2). Elongated core elements, e.g. wire, strip, filaments and threads, whether of single or multistrands, twisted strands or of close helical coil formation are coated by passing them vertically in a taut condition at a predetermined linear speed axially through a pressure coating chamber 5, a die 7 and a heated chamber 13, all in vertical alignment, and applying pressure to plastics material in the chamber 5 which converges toward the die inlet, whereby a sheath coating is compressed about the element. In the embodiment illustrated, the chamber 5 contains a hollow screw 11 through which the element E to be coated passes, the element being kept taut by passing it between pairs of rollers at each end of the apparatus. Spring loading may be used on one roller of one or both pairs to allow some slip on the element E which may thus pass through the apparatus in a taut condition without undue tension being applied to it. The screw 11 may terminate in a small mandrel 20 from which the element E passes to become exposed to the pressurised plastic material in the tapered end portion of the chamber 5 before entering the die 7. The supply container 2 contains plastics material 3 which is forced under pressure by the spring-loaded plunger 8 into the horizontal duct 4 where it is fed by a screw 10 into the chamber 5. The plastics material 3 may be a dispersion of polyvinyl chloride resin in a plasticizer and is preferably of high viscosity.
