Abstract
1279456 Composite staple fibre/thermoplastic polymer yarns E BOBKOWICZ and A J BOBKOWICZ 11 July 1969 [2 Oct 1968] 34951/69 Headings D1F and D1W A method of making spun yarns of composite staple fibre/thermoplastic polymer material comprises the steps:linearly supplying through feed-in rolls 11, 12 a continuous strand 10 of substantially consolidated composite staple fibre/thermoplastic polymer substrate; heating the strand within a fibre-restrictive zone 13 to a point at which the polymer substrate becomes plastic but below the melting point thereof; subjecting the strand within the fibre-restrictive zone 13 to a twisting torque to helically rearrange the fibres; cooling the twisted strand to coagulate the polymer; and linearly winding-up the obtained consolidated spun yarn on a collecting roll 19; the feed-in rolls 11, 12 and collecting roll 19 constituting two fixed points between which the twist is applied and substantially retained. The twist is preferably applied by means of a false twist device 16 and a further pinch point may be provided by a pair of nip rolls 17, 18 positioned downstream of the false twist device 16. The fibre-restrictive zone 13 is preferably formed by means of grooves provided in the heater, the grooves preferably being of V-shape. A plurality of strands 10 may be treated simultaneously in which case the feedin rolls 11, 12 are provided with circumferential grooves. The staple fibres and thermoplastic polymer substrate are preferably brought together immediately following extrusion of the polymer whereby adhesion between the fibres and the polymer occurs. The staple fibre material may be drafted and fed to the nip of rolls 11, 12 with the polymer being extruded directly into said nip. In a further embodiment, the polymer material is extruded and heated during its passage to the nip rolls 11, 12 to maintain the material in a tacky state. The polymer material is preferably extruded through aligned orifices to form a curtain of filaments. The twisted composite material may be cooled on leaving the heated fibre-restrictive zone by means of an air jet immediately upstream of the false-twist device. The grooves forming the fibre-restrictive zone within the heater preferably narrow towards the exit end thereof to achieve a greater compaction of the material. Preferred materials for the thermoplastic polymer polyamides, polyolefins and acrylics.
