A safety device for contrarily rotating cylinders 10, 11 of a printing machine comprises upper and lower guard plates 1, 6 whose adjacent edges overlap and whose edges extending towards the cylinders 10, 11 are of rolled-in circular form, the guard plates 1, 6 being carried by arms 2, 7 respectively which are pivoted on bolts 3, located on the side of the point of contact of the cylinders remote from the guard plates, and are pressed against adjustable screw stops by springs 5, 8. Electric switches 12, 13 are associated with the arms 2, 7 and these are actuated to stop the machine when the corresponding guard plate is moved away from its associated roller.
