Abstract
920,550. Supporting surgical lamps. RITTER CO. Inc. Dec. 12, 1960, No. 42711/60. Classes 75 (3) and 75 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A surgical operating light is pivotally mounted on a partial yoke attached to one end of a horizontally extending supporting arm which is pivoted to a downwardly depending supporting member rotatably secured to a carriage movable on an elongated track, means being provided for counterbalancing the weight of the light so that it will remain in adjusted position. In the form shown, the lamp 14, Fig. 5, is pivoted at 128 on the half yoke 13, a cable 136 connecting the pivot 128 to a pulley 134 passing through the interior of the yoke 13. The pulley 134 is driven by a shaft 132, Fig. 3, extending from a cavity 120 at the opposite end of the supporting arm 108, the shaft 132 being driven by bevel gears 142, 144 operated by a knob 148. The electric supply to the light also passes through the yoke 13. The arm 108 is pivoted at 104 on a vertical arm 63, a counterbalancing mechanism comprising a rod 152 pivoted to the arm 63 at 102 and carrying at the opposite end a collar 156 and a pair of arms 158 pivoted to the arm 108 at 160 and terminating in a spring cap 162 between which and the collar 156 is arranged a coil spring 164. The pivots 102, 160 are connected by a link 166. The arm 63 is fastened to a carriage 24, Fig. 7, comprising a U-shaped member 28 having turned-up edges supporting axles on which are three pairs of rollers 32 running in fixed channels 26 on the ceiling of the operating theatre. The member 28 also carries axles 38 having rollers 40 moving in channelshaped members 42 and connected together by a member 50 carrying contact members 52 engaging bus-bars connected to a source of electric current. The contact members are connected by wires to a conducting member 60 consisting of a central rod with enlarged rounded ends, surrounded by an insulating sleeve enclosed in a conducting tube with contact members, the whole being surrounded by a further insulating sleeve. The member 60 engages in a member 62, Fig. 10, comprising an insulating outer casing 78 enclosing a tubular conducting member 80, a second insulating casing 82 extending part way along the member 80 and enclosing an inner conducting member 84 so that when the part 60 is inserted, the rounded end of the central rod engages the member 84 and the contact members on the outer tube engage the member 80, the members 84, 80 being connected by leads 86, 90 through a coupling plug 100, Fig. 3, and switch 118 to the operating light. The light may also be adjusted by a knob 148 on the arm 108.
