Abstract

<PICT:0636647/III/1> <PICT:0636647/III/2> In apparatus for detecting explosive or toxic gases, of the kind disclosed in Specification 567,101, the detachable filament unit comprises the filaments B, B1 supported from terminals A3 carried by insulating cylindrical end-portions A, A1, spaced apart by the wall A2 which screens the filaments in known manner. The unit is connected into circuit by means of the three contact pins D connected respectively to adjacent ends of the two filaments and to the contact C2. The other ends of the filaments are connected respectively to the ends of an annular potentiometer wire C carried on the portion A, the rotatable potentiometer arm C1 being carried by the contact C2. The potentiometer serves for the initial adjustment of the relative resistances of the filaments and is preferably locked in its adjusted position, e.g. by soldering the arm C1 to the wire C. In an alternative construction, the fixed contact C2 engages another contact when the unit is positioned in the detecting apparatus, in which case the corresponding contact D is dispensed with.
