Abstract

Equipment exposed to ionizing radiation is lubricated with a radiation-resistant lubricating oil that has been prepared by reacting a polyphenyl ether of the formula <FORM:0920509/III/1> where n is an integer from 0-4 inclusive, with an alkyl halide and/or an olefin containing, in either case, up to 20 carbon atoms per molecule, or is lubricated with a grease which has been prepared from such oil. Products obtained by reacting di-, tri-, and tetra-phenyl ethers with n-butyl bromide or propylene tetramer are specified. The lubricating oils may be mixed with grease-thickening agents and brought to grease consistency. Preferably, a non-soap thickening agent such as sodium terephthalamate, finely dispersed silica, a claytype thickener, or an aryl-substituted urea is used for this purpose.ALSO:The invention comprises the reaction product of p-triphenyl ether (i.e. 1.4-diphenoxy benzene) with an alkyl halide and/or an olefin containing, in either case, up to 20 carbon atoms per molecule. The alkylation may be effected in presence of a Friedel Crafts catalyst e.g. aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, or boron fluoride. Preferred alkylating agents are n-butyl bromide and propylene tetramer and the amount of alkylating agent used is preferably 1-3 times that of the triphenyl ether on a molar basis. The reaction temperature may be 90 DEG C. The crude product may be subjected to distillation. The alkylated triphenyl ethers of the invention as well as other similarly alkylated compounds obtained from polyphenyl ethers of the formula <FORM:0920509/IV(a)/1> where n is an integer from 0 to 4 inclusive, are resistant to radiation and may be used for lubricating equipment which is exposed to ionising radiation.
