Abstract

920,508. Feeding webs. R. D. H. THOMPSON & CO. Ltd. Nov. 30, 1960 [Dec. 8, 1959], No. 41769/59. Class 100 (1). [Also in Groups XI and XV] In a bookbinding machine (see Group XV) for binding books, pamphlets, and the like by separate rings of flexible material passing through registering holes in the pages of the book, tapes 18 of polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene are fed upwardly from reels 17 corresponding in number to the number of holes in the book edge to a position beneath the book for forming said rings. The tapes pass over guide blocks 19 provided with non-return pawls 23 between the side walls 25 of gripper members which reciprocate along grooves in the plate 24 to feed the tapes forwardly, and are engaged at their upper ends by brake rods 32 mounted on a shaft 33 and having spring-loaded buttons 34 at their lower ends. The grippers comprise channel-shaped members having L-shaped side walls 25 mounted on a reciprocable shaft 26, a spring-loaded finger 30 being mounted between the side walls of each gripper on the shaft 26, to press against the tape passing therebeneath. The tapes are unwound from the reels by a swinging bar 37 and the brake rods lifted to disengage the tapes prior to feeding. The free ends of the tapes which are fed forwardly beneath the book are cut off by a reciprocating knife 42 and the ends of the tapes flattened against the plate 24 to facilitate further feeding by air blown through pipes 39b.
