[Also in Group XVII] In a machine wherein flat objects such as slices of meat or bread are placed in a pile on a support, a sheet of paper being placed between each slice by suction means, the holder 10 for the paper sheets 13 is positioned above the support 8 and the pile, and the suction means comprises suckers 18 on a tube 17 carried in oscillating arms 16 which by their movements, control a valve 37 in the supply line of the suckers so that a sheet is released above the pile. The valve 37 is electromagnetically operated when one arm 16 closes a switch 36 in the sheet-release position. The holder 10 is slightly inclined to the horizontal, a weight 14 moves the sheet pile towards the front plate 11 of the holder, and the plate 11 is cut away to allow the suckers 18 to detach the front sheet. Slices of meat &c. from a slicing machine (not shown) are conveyed by a belt 2, having transport spikes 1 thereon and are stripped off the belt 2 by tongues 5 on a member 4 pivotal about a spindle 6. The slices fall on to the support 8, which comprises a conveyer belt. The suckers 18 are oscillated from a driven shaft 30 through a cam 29 and levers 24 to 26. The shaft 30 also drives a cam 33 through reduction gears, which rocks a feeler 34 to operate a switch 35 in the circuit of the valve 37 after a predetermined number of slices has been stacked on the belt 8, whereupon the suckers 18 are cut off from the vacuum supply. The feeler 34 may also cause the conveyer belt 8 to be driven to remove the interleaved pile of slices.
