Abstract
Cyanoethylated polyamides are made by treating polyamides in solution or in suspension in the form of powder, granules, fibres or filaments with acrylonitrile with or without inert diluents at a temperature between 20 DEG and 90 DEG C. in the presence of a basic catalyst such as an alkali metal hydroxide or a quaternary ammonium base. Specified polyamides are poly-S -caprolactam and polyhexamethylene adipamide. Specified inert diluents are dioxan and benzene. Phenyl-b -naphthylamine may be present as an acrylonitrile polymerization inhibitor. The examples describe the reaction of acrylonitrile with:- (1) and (3) poly-S -caprolactam in the presence of sodium hydroxide; (2) polyhexamethylene adipamide in the presence of sodium hydroxide; (4) and (5) poly-S -caprolactam in the presence of trimethylphenyl ammonium ethoxide and (6) poly-S -caprolactam in the presence of triethylphenyl ammonium ethoxide.
