Abstract
920,190. Boat steering gear. TELEFLEX PRODUCTS Ltd. Nov. 3, 1961 [Nov. 7, 1960], No. 38207/60. Class 114. A steering control comprises a push-pull multistranded flexible cable 12 having a projecting helix 11 on the exterior, the turns of which helix mesh with a toothed wheel 10 of a " wrapped head " 8 driven directly or through gearing 13, 14 from the spindle 15 of a steering wheel 17, so that the cable passes to a flexible guiding conduit 27 which extends from the wrapped head to an anchorage 29 on, or adjacent, the transom 34, which anchorage is mounted (via a ball 31) for universal movement, except about the axis of the conduit, a stiff metal tube 37 coaxial with the conduit being secured at one end (via a connector 38) to the anchorage to move therewith and so that the cable passes thereinto, the other end of the tube having a gland 40 for the passage of a stiff rod 39, the inner end of which is secured (via a connector 45) to the end of the flexible cable, whilst the other end is connected (via fitting 41 and securing means 44) to the steering arm of the tiller or rudder or outboard driving unit.
