Abstract
Coal straight from the pit or at most after initial sizing is mixed with an oil before it is wet-cleaned by a treatment involving contact with water. Up to 1% by weight based on the coal of a low viscosity petroleum fraction is preferred. Admixture may be effected in a mixing device or by spraying the oil on to the coal, e.g. as it lies in a bunker, while it is travelling on a conveyer belt or at the discharge point of the belt, or during its passage through a screen for initial sizing. A water-repellent such as a silicone may also be admixed.
