Abstract
919,600. Sintering ores. McDOWELL CO. Inc. June 1, 1959, No. 18645/59. Class 82 (1). A method of charging a sintering machine with a deep bed comprising finely-divided material mixed and formed into pellets of varying sizes and loose particles consists of mixing the material to make it uniform and so conveying it to moving pallets and applying it by many applications so as to spread it from side to side and upwardly and downwardly and along a gradual slope corresponding to the angle of travel of a thin firing zone created by ignition of the bed at the bottom in updraft operation and causing the zone to move upwardly, or at the top in downdraft operation to cause it to move downwardly. A thin grate-bed or covering of suitable material is first ignited and updraft is preferably applied to promote firing. In an apparatus for charging the machine (Figs. 3 and 4), the pellets are made preferably in balling-discs 12, gathered on a belt 15 discharging upon a belt 18 extending through a hood H and delivering to a reciprocated conveyer belt 20, for spreading a combustible layer C on a conveyer 1 to form a bed B, mounted on a slope, by means of a frame 23. The frame 23 supports end rollers 22 and 24 and is supported to be reciprocated on a carrier formed of members 28 having rollers 29 embracing the flanges of a sloping mono-rail track 30, to be driven by a cable 34 attached to the frame 23, the belt 20 being made to travel along the track by any suitable mechanism, the forward end thereof being moved along to form a slope S. The delivery end of the frame 23 may carry distributing means, e.g. a pivoted shoot 35, and means for oscillation to distribute the material. The angle of the conveyer slope is such that the pellets and particles do not roll and the reciprocation is timed to give thin applications. Further additions of fuel can be made by various methods to increase its content. The conveyer 1 comprieses pellets having outside walls 2, and below it is a windbox W. A grate-covering of previously-fired pellets is fed from a shoot 4 and ignited at 5 before the material is fed. In a modified form (Fig. 7), the reciprocating belt 20a, which is cooled somewhat, has a portion extending upwardly outside the hood H, the pulley 22 is carried on a frame supported by a sloping rail 30 and the frame carries the material spreader, e.g. a shoot. The upper and lower reaches of the belt 20a turn around pulleys 50, 51 out of the hood and pass over an external pulley 53 moved up and down as the frame and pulley 22 move up and down along the slope. The pulley 53 may be power-driven at variable speed by a motor 58 and is carried by a support 55 counter-balanced by a weight 56 on a cable passing over a drum 57 variable in speed.
