Abstract

[Also in Group XII] A gas-liquid contact apparatus comprises a casing having at least one inlet opening and one outlet opening, a fan, a liquid supply vessel located at the bottom of the. casing, a unit for mechanically atomising liquid, the casing comprising an annular intermediate part open at top and bottom and fixed e.g. to an air duct by means of a flange having the inlet and outlet therein, a lower part of the casing, which acts as the liquid supply vessel, being detachably arranged at the underside of the intermediate part, the casing also having an upper part detachably arranged to carry the atomising unit and the fan together with a motor for driving the latter, a shaft carrying the fan and the rotary parts of the motor and atomiser unit being supported in a single bearing shield detachably fixed at the underside of the upper part of the casing, and the atomiser unit and the fan being arranged below and the motor above the shield, so that the stator of the motor may be removably fixed at the upper end of the upper part of the casing. As shown, flange 24 formed on casting 21 is attached to air duct 10. Within flange 24 are two rectangular openings separated from each other by a web 28, the lower and larger opening 26 being an air inlet and opening 27 being an outlet for a mist stream produced by the atomiser. Within an intermediate casing there is a funnel-shaped downwardly tapering annular insert 30 which sub-divides the casing into 2 compartments communicating with openings 26, 27 respectively. A cover 42 has a bearing shield 44 fixed to it by screws 43 in which a shield a vertical shaft 45 is rotatably supported by means of two ball bearings 46. A portion of shaft 45 projecting upwardly carries an induction motor the stator iron core 53 of which is arranged in upper casing part 52. Fan 57 driven by the motor is also supported by shaft 45. A portion of the shaft 45 projecting downwards from shield 44 carries a hub 62 which is designed as a flinger disc and is kept against a step of the shaft by a screw nut 64. Between hub 62 and screw 64 is located a bigger flinger disc 67 centred on a sealing ring 68. At its underside flinger disc 67 has fan blades 69 by means of which an air stream is developed between openings 26, 27. Lower part 38 of the casing is designed as an annular wall which surrounds a suction wall with clearance and serves to keep away from suction branch 73 any dirt collected on casing 38. A stationary perforated baffle rim 78 comprises a large number of radial lamellae 79 having between them passage ways 80 for atomised liquid. Rim 78 is arranged on the lower rim of a bell-shaped part 81 supported on the atomiser casing at its lower end only. In operation, motor 51, 52, 53 rotates shaft 45, flinger discs 63, 67 and suction branch 73 at high speed, causing a powerful air stream to develop between opening 26, 27. A portion of air flowing through duct 11 is taken therefrom, directed through the liquid atomiser and subsequently returned to duct 11. Preferably means (not shown) are provided for continually and automatically refilling the lower part of the casing 38 with liquid to be atomised e.g. water. Specification 634,785 is referred to.
