United States Patent 2,766,071 APPARATUS FOR ATOMIZING LIQUIDS Karl Flnry, Adliswil, Switzerland, assignor to Defensor A. G., Zurich, Switzerland Application March 8, 1955 Serial No. 492,990 Claims priority, application Switzerland March 11, 195% 7 Claims. (Cl. 299-63) The present invention relates to an improvement of the apparatus for atomizing liquids as disclosed in the Swiss Patents Nos. 257,663 and 285,473.

In an apparatus of the aforementioned type, the invention essentially consists in that the casing-jacket, open at least in part, and carries at the outlet-opening a vertically adjustable collar.

The lower part 112- of the casing is fixed by screws on the feet 2 of the frame. Said screws 11 secure at the same time a sheet metal deflector ring 12 to the lower on the other hand upwards by the outer surface of the ring 12. On the ring 12, the whole motor system with the thrower system is suspended in the following way:
The casing of motor 3 is connected through clips 13 and screws 14 to the motor shrouding, which comprises the two parts 15a and 15b. Fitted from below to the lower casing part 15a bet 8 in the form of a lamellar ring. Further, the upper casing part 15b may be put onto the lower part 15a and be secured, if necessary, by special means. Through the lower casing part 15a the motor system is suction of humid moist air through the thereof, the hollow screw-bolts provide lowing dry air to flow into upper aperture means for althe casing 15a, 15b and for quantity and quality of the aerosol and to make the mist very fine. Removably connected to the lower end of the shaft 4 is a hub 22 having the thrower discs 5 arranged thereon. For this purpose the hub 22 has, say, six radial ribs 23 (Fig. 2) against the front edges 23a of which the inner rims of the discs 5 rest for centering and balancing them. By screws 24 (Fig. l) which extend through corresponding bores 25 of the thrower discs 5, these are attached to the annular part 22a of the hub 22 and at the same time to the suction pipe 6. The radial ribs 23 of the thrower discs are not only adapted for centering and balancing them, but also serve as a centrifugal pump. Since the liquid suckedin through the inlet 6 between the six radial ribs 23 passes out to the thrower discs 5, six liquid outlet zones appear on the discs 5. In order to distribute evenly over 360 degrees the liquid outlet interrupted circumferentially, the upper sides of the thrower discs 5 can be interrupted in their radial course by an annular ridge, which may consist of a round rib or hump 26, such as indicated as a modification to the upper disc 5 in Pig. 2.
The inlet pipe rotating with the thrower system may at its lower end be preferably provided with a transverse rib 6a acting as centrifugal pump in order to obtain a greater output. The increased quantity of liquid thereby entrained rather involves the risk of fouling the thrower system, for which reason the suction branch is at its lower end surrounded by a sieve 27 seated on a mount 23 being in turn detachably secured below at the lower casing-jacket part 1b in the manner shown in Fig. 1. Said sieve serves not only to prevent fouling of the system, but also to avoid turbulence in order to calm the liquid in the vessel 7. The mount 28 for the sieve 27 is designed so that also other appliances or attachments may be put thereon.
With the inlet 6 provision may be made for an electric heater, preferably in the shape of a heating coil encircling the sieve 27 and adapted to preheat the liquid in the container 7, thus further helping to increase the output of the apparatus.
What I claim is:
1. Apparatus for atomizing liquids and discharging the same in the form of an aerosol mist, comprising a casing, said casing having a discharge opening and an air inlet opening, a housing within and spaced from said casing to provide a passage between said casing and said housing, said casing and said housing being of such a configuration that said passage is curved and converges toward said discharge opening, means for moving air through said passage from said inlet opening to said discharge opening, atomizer means for introducing fluid particles to said moving air to form a mist therein, and a collar secured within said discharge opening and extending into said passage, said collar serving as a baffle to collect heavier particles in the mist which are unable to follow said curved passage due to the centrifugal effect occuring during curvilinear travel.
2. Apparatus for atomizing liquids and discharging the same in the form of an aerosol mist as defined in claim 1, wherein said collar is adjustably mounted within said discharge opening to provide means for controlling the size of the fluid particles emitted therefrom.
3. Apparatus for atomizing liquids and discharging the same in the form of an aerosol mist, comprising a casing, said casing having a discharge opening at the top thereof, a first intake opening at the bottom thereof and a second intake opening in the walls of said casing intermediate said discharge and said first intake openings, a vertical shaft in said casing, a motor for driving said shaft, a housing surrounding and enclosing said motor and spaced from said casing to provide a curved, converging passage through which air moves from said intake openings to said discharge opening, a propeller secured to the upper end of said shaft near said discharge opening and causing said movement of air through said passage, a fluid receptacle beneath said casing, a suction pipe connected to said shaft at the lower end thereof and projecting into said fluid receptacle, at least one distributor disk secured to and extending outwardly from the upper end of said suction pipe, a stationary disintegrator ring surrounding said distributor disk, said ring having a multiplicity of battles spaced to provide passages therebetween through which liquid particles discharged from said distributor disk may pass, said second air intake opening being substantially opposite said disintegrator ring, a cylindrical deflector ring coaxial with said disintegrator ring, said deflector ring being secured by an air-tight seal at its lower edge to said casing and extending between said disintegrator ring and said second air intake opening, and a collar secured within said discharge opening and extending into said passage, said collar serving as a baffie to collect heavier particles in the mist which are unable to follow said curved passage due to the centrifugal effect occurring during curvilinear travel.
4. Apparatus for atomizing liquids and discharging the same in the form of an aerosol mist as defined in claim 3 including means for conveying into said motor housing dry air from said second air inlet opening.
5. Apparatus for atomizing liquids and discharging the same in the form of an aerosol mist as defined in claim 4 wherein said conveying means comprise hollow bolts securing said motor housing to said ring wall.
6. Apparatus for atomizing liquids and distributing the same in the form of an aerosol mist as defined in claim 3 wherein the surfaces of said casing and said housing contacted by said mist are roughened to facilitate the wetting of said surfaces and to prevent the forming of large fluid droplets thereon.

Apparatus for atomizing liquids and distributing the same in the form of an aerosol mist as defined in claim 3 wherein said means for connecting said disks and said suction pipe to said shaft comprise a hub member secured to the lower end of said shaft, said hub member having radial ribs projecting therefrom and serving as blades of a centrifugal pump, said disks having apertures through the center thereof to allow said disks to be mounted and centered in stacked relation on said 'ribs, and means for securing the uppermost portion of said suction pipe to the under surface of said lowermost disk.
