[Also in Group XXXVI] A high-voltage rectifier, comprising a number of series connected semi-conductor rectifier devices .surrounded by a corona shield electrically connected to the rectifier and with rounded surfaces presented to points of high voltage, is mounted within and is electrically insulated from a housing. As shown in Fig. 2 a pile of rectifier units 20, each comprising a rectifier 12 shunted by a capacitor 14 and resistor 16, as shown in Fig. 1, is mounted by terminal rods 28 and 28<SP>1</SP> in insulating bushes 40 and 40<SP>1</SP> inside a cylindrical housing 38. Capacitors 18 and 18<SP>1</SP> are connected in shunt between the terminals of the stack and its mid-point. A bracket 26 at the mid-point of the stack mounts and electrically connects a polished, two-part, cylindrical corona shield 30 for the rectifier stack. The shield is located coaxially with the rectifier stack by means of perforated insulating discs 34 and 34<SP>1</SP> positioned by nuts on the terminal rods. Perforated annular insulators 36 and 36<SP>1</SP> space the corona shield from the ends of the housing 38. The perforations in the insulators, 34, 341 and 36, 36<SP>1</SP>, allow coolant to circulate upwards through the corona shield. The coolant may be an oil or may be a gas, such as air or sulphur hexafluoride, in which case the corona shield may be made permeable to the gas. Instead of being made as a straightsided cylinder, as shown in Fig. 2, the corona shield may have an elliptical vertical crosssection. The container 38 may be sealed hermetically.
