Abstract

In a process of preparing fibre-forming polyesters or polyamides, agitation is effected by means of a device the clearance between which and the internal walls of the vessel is not greater than half an inch. Thus bis (b -hydroxy-ethyl) terephthalate was agitated in an autoclave with antimony as oxide and titanium dioxide at 284 DEG C. and final vacuum of 0,1 mm. mercury. The time to reach the required degree of polycondensation was 256 minutes using an anchor agitator with clearance of less than half an inch; 270 minutes with a similar agitator and clearance of more than half an inch; and 225 minutes using a helical agitator and clearance of less than half an inch.ALSO:In a process for agitating in a vessel liquids or mixtures of liquids with gases in solids which constitute a fibre-forming polyamide or polyester reaction mixture (see Group IV (a)) and which has or attains a viscosity of at least 10 poises, the clearance between the vessel and the agitator is not more than half an inch and preferably 1/8 to 3/8 inch. The agitator may be anchor-shaped, or helical, and rotate so that the mixture is lifted up at the sides of the vessel. The helix may be hemispherical or conical and have openings in the flights, which may be of round, square or ribbon section; and may be provided with baffles or a concentric helix of smaller radius.
