Abstract

<PICT:0764425/IV(a)/1> Semi-chemical cellulose is subjected to treatment with molecular chlorine in a continuous process in which the semi-pulp is treated with the chlorine in at least three successive stages at increasing cellulose dilution, without any intermediate alkaline treatment. The temperature of the material in any stage is regulated by the introduction of diluting water of a predetermined temperature or steam. The successive reactions may be carried out in separate vessels or in different compartments of a single apparatus. As shown, semi-pulp is introduced into the first reaction chamber 1, consisting of several vertical tubes made of chlorine-resisting material, which empty into a vessel 3. The vessel 3 is lined with acid-resisting material and is provided with a mechanically actuated extractor 2 and an agitator. The material descends the tubes by gravity, past nozzles through which the chlorine is introduced. The material then passes through a second reaction chamber 4 in which it is agitated by helical stirrer 6, arranged so as to agitate the material in the lower part of the chamber only. Chlorine is introduced through the hollow stirrer shaft, and diluting water-which may have its pH value adjusted by the addition of hydrochloric acid-is introduced tangentially in the vicinity of the stirrer. The material then passes to a third reaction chamber 5 similar to the chamber 4.
