Abstract

Acrylonitrile is polymerized in dimethyl sulphoxide in the presence of a catalyst, the reaction being started at an elevated temperature which is gradually reduced as polymerization proceeds, e.g. the reaction is started at a temperature of 50 DEG to 80 DEG C. and gradually reduced to from 20 DEG to 40 DEG C. Catalysts specified are ammonium persulphate, azodiisobutyronitrile and ultra-violet light. If desired, further quantities of catalyst, solvent and monomer may be added as the reaction proceeds. Polymerization may be stopped when the desired viscosity has been achieved by adding a chain stopper, e.g. phenol. Specification 917,847 is referred to.
