Abstract

[Also in Group XXXIII] A truck for supporting the outer end of a telescoping gangway comprises a frame 62 on which are mounted two vheels 70, each driven by a reversible electric motor 72 powered by motor-generator sets 82 (only one of which is shown in Fig. 2). Steering is effected by relatively varying the speeds of the two motors 72. A lower column 38 is attached to the frame 62 by bearings 64 having a horizontal axis perpendicular to the wheel axis, and intermediate and upper columns 40 and 36 respectively telescope over the lower column 38, the upper column being rigidly connected to the gangway which is to be supported. The columns are free to rotate relative to one another and are telescoped to raise and lower the level of the gangway's outer end, by a screw 44 and a nut 48, the nut being fixed to the lower column 38 and the screw being attached to the upper column 36 by thrust bearings, and rotated by a sprocket 60, driven by a chain 56 and a reversible motor 52. For ease of tyre replacement each wheel may be split into two portions 90, held together by bolts 94, each portion being supported on the stub axle by a bearing 98.
