Abstract

Cellulosic material, particularly cellulosic textile material, is treated with a sensitizer comprising an ethylenically unsaturated compound, an aromatic compound or a primary, secondary or tertiary amine, and then subjected to ionizing radiation to effect cross-linking of the material. The sensitizer is used in a small proportion, defined as sufficient to effect the desired cross-linking without changing the appearance or finish of the material. Preferred sensitizers are (a) aromatic hydrocarbons having at least two uncondensed benzene rings, e.g. 1,4-diphenyl benzene, diphenylmethane, triphenylmethane, fluorene, benzal- and benzyl-fluorenes and hexaphenylethane; (b) unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes, e.g. crotonaldehyde and citral; (c) unsaturated aliphatic ketones, e.g. phorone and 2-methyl heptenone; (d) aromatic saturated and unsaturated ketones, e.g. benzophenone, chlorobenzophenone, benzalacetophenone, dicinnamylidene acetone, benzoquinone, diphenoquinone and a -naphthoquinone; (e) aromatic hydroxy ketones, e.g. p-hydroxyacetophenone; and (f) primary, secondary and tertiary aliphatic amines having 4 to 20 carbon atoms and aromatic amines having 1 to 3 benzene rings with 1 to 3 amine groups attached to the ring(s), e.g. aniline, diphenylamine, tributylamine and cyclohexylamine. Suitable radiation includes g -, b - and X-rays at a preferred total dosage of from 5X104 to 3X106 rads. The process may be applied to cellulosic yarns, filaments or threads, or to woven, knitted and unwoven fabrics of natural or regenerated cellulose, or to such materials containing cellulosic fibres, and which have been provided with a resin finish. The material may be impregnated with a solution or dispersion containing less than 15%, e.g. 0,1 to 5%, by weight of the sensitizer. Treatment with a sensitizing compound prior to irradiation obviates the need for the heating step disclosed in Specification 895,479, or irradiation in substantial absence of oxygen as in Specification 916,567. The treated materials have improved tensile strength, and increased abrasion, crease and tear resistance.
