Description

Patented Jan. 31, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CELLULOSIC DRESSING No Drawing. Application October 25, 1946, Serial No. 705,811. In France September 14, 1945 Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires September 14, 1965 4 Claims. (Cl. 28-72) The present invention has for its object to provide as a new article of manufacture an aseptic and anti-septic cellulosic dressing or bandage, formed of a fabric the warp and weft of which consist of very narrow strips (having a width of a fraction of a millimetre) of regenerated cellulose.
In order to obtain a cellulosic bandage of the above type, a cellulosic film is first cut into very thin fiat strips or threads, preferably having a width smaller than one millimetre, said threads being thereafter reeled for use as an ordinary textile material in a weaving frame.
The above specified thread is then used in an ordinary weaving operation with a warp and weft worked into a fabric so as finally to obtain a band having a width as desired for the bandage.
In order to provide the greatest possible flexibility in the cellulosic threads, the latter are coated with a suitable mineral oil (for instance, ordinary petrol).
The woven band thus obtained is subjected to a calendering or rolling operation, intended on the one hand to soften the fabric, and on the other hand to eliminate any asperities which could appear as a result of an overturning during the weaving process, of some of the threads. The calendering temperature is desirably round about 90 C., the operation being carried out under a pressure of 2,000 kg, for a bandage having a width of about ten centimetres.
In order that the bandage may present the required aseptic and germicidal properties, there is used as initial material, a regenerated cellulose having been impregnated (at a definite stage of its manufacture) with a suitable germicide.
According to a modification, the cellulosic bandage could be subjected to an impregnating process prior to calendering for example.
The bandage thus obtained is then coiled to be delivered for sale.
The term petrol as used herein and in the claims is the equivalent of the term petrole specified in the corresponding French priority application No. 502,788, filed September 14, 1945, now French Patent No. 919,557 and corresponds to that portion of crude petroleum distilling between 150 C. and 300 C.
It will be obvious that the exemplary form of embodiment of the process as specified above is given merely in an indicative and not in a restrictive sense, and that said process may receive any modifications in the details thereof without exceeding the scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A process for manufacturing an aseptic bandage from regenerated cellulose sheet material previously impregnated with a germicide product, comprising forming said sheet into a plurality of strips, weaving said strips into a fabric including a warp and a weft, treating the fabric thus produced with petrol and calendering the fabric thus produced at a temperature of substantially C. and substantially one thousand pounds pressure per inch transverse linear dimension.
2. A process for manufacturing an aseptic bandage comprising forming a sheet of regenerated cellulose sheet material, previously treated with a germicide into a plurality of narrow elongatedstrips, each having a maximum transverse dimension not exceeding about one twenty-fifth of an inch, reeling said strips on a reel, weaving said reeled strips as on a conventional weaving frame into a fabric having warp and weft whereby to produce a bandage of desired width, treating said fabric with petrol and calendering said fabric at a temperature of substantially 90 C., and under a calendering pressure of substantially one thousand pounds per inch transverse linear dimension.
3. An aseptic bandage as obtained by the process set forth in claim 1.
4. An aseptic bandage as obtained by the process set forth in claim 2.
