Abstract
917,427. Coated metals. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. Nov. 9, 1959 [Nov. 18, 1958], No. 37973/59. Class 140. A process for lacquering metals comprises coating the metals with a lacquer comprising at least one aliphatic ester of acrylic, methacrylic or ethacrylic acids the aliphatic residue of which contains 1 to 6 carbcn atoms, at least one unsaturated polyester resin, at least one polyvinyl ether, and a hardening catalyst. Catalysts specified are organic peroxides, optionally in combination with aromatic tertiary amines and/ or alpha-amino sulphones and promoters, e.g. compounds with labile halogen atoms and/or heavy metal compounds. Optional ingredients are non-polymerizable solvents, e.g. ethyl or butyl acetate, toluene or acetone; other monomers and polymers, e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl acetate or other acrylic esters, polyvinyl chloride or acetate, or ketone-aldehyde resins; cross-linking monomers, e.g. glycol dimethacrylate, allyl methacrylate, diallyl phthalate or triallyl cyanurate; fillers, e.g. ground shale, barium sulphate or silica; paraffin. wax and pigments. The metal is preferably freed from grease, oil or dirt before applying the lacquer, which may be used as a prime coat for another lacquer. The lacquers may be prepared in two portions, the first containing the binding agents and perhaps the reducing portions and co-catalysts of a Redox system and the second the peroxidic catalysts and perhaps alpha-amino sulphones in a solvent or plasticizer, the two being mixed during or shortly prior to lacquering. Specification 830,835 which describes similar compositions and their use as adhesives is referred to.
