917,286. Cold separation of gas mixtures. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Jan. 24, 1961 [Jan. 26, 1960], No. 2789/60. Class 8(2). Removal of carbon dioxide from a gas mixture e.g., air being cooled in switch exchangers 14, 14<SP>1</SP> traversed by counterflowing separated components is effected at least in part by final cooling of the mixture or a part thereof in a heat exchanger zone 17 designed to prevent . any substantial deposition of condensed carbon dioxide on the surfaces thereof and subsequently removing entrained solid particles from the cold gas mixture stream. As shown a side stream 15 is withdrawn from an on-stream regenerator 14 at a temperature below the dew point of carbon dioxide and having traversed a heat storage reservoir 16 is further cooled in the zone 17 traversed by cold nitrogen or air and the soild carbon dioxide is removed from suspension by bubbling through a liquid air bath 19, and the so-contaminated liquid air is filtered at 20. In a modification wherein cooling is effected by reversing exchangers, the worm ends are provided with perforated metal sheets corrugated normally to the direction of flow whilst in the cold ends are smooth non-perforated metal sheets corrugated parallel to the direction of flow and on the surfaces of which solid carbon dioxide does not readily condense.
