A cigarette is provided with a numerical scale 16, Fig. 1, which indicates the declining efficiency of the tobacco content of the cigarette as a filtering agent upon smoking; the scale may be replaced by a coloured band 52, Fig. 3, the width of which is a function of the distant from the lit end 56. The point 100, Fig. 1, or 58, Fig. 3, indicates the point beyond which the cigarette should not be smoked.
