Abstract
916,172. Moulding containers from suspensions of refractory fibres &c. EDNELL, D. F. May 4, 1959 [May 23, 1958], No. 15271/59. Class 87(2). A refractory container, e.g. a mould for casting metals, is formed on a permeable mould by immersing it in a suspension comprising refractory fibres, a binder, and possibly finely ground refractory material, and applying pressure to the suspension. A container 1 having an airtight lid 1a is partly filled with the suspension, a permeable mould 5 is lowered into it by means of rod 4, and air pressure is then applied through pipe 3. When a sufficient layer has been built up on the mould it is raised above the liquid level so that the water in the mould is expelled by air pressure through a tube 7. The lid la and the mould 5 are then removed and the mould placed in a cup-like member 11, Fig. 2 (not shown), so that the outer face of the refractory layer is smoothed. Compressed air is then applied to conduit 6 to remove the said layer and the lid and mould 5 are replaced in the Fig. position. The refractory layer is then dried and heated to incondescence to produce a metal casting mould.
