Abstract

A process for the production of foam materials comprises reacting together in one step at least one polyisocyanate and a mixture of castor oil and one or more linear and/or branched polyethers in the presence of a blowing agent, the amount of castor oil being more than 50% by weight of the total weight of the polyether and castor oil. As polyethers these may be used polymerization products of ethylene or propylene oxide or of tetrahydrofuran, if desired in admixture with polyhydric alcohols and/or amines. Addition products of alkylene oxides with such p amines as ethylene diamine and diethylene triamine can be used. In Example (1) a foam is prepared by reacting mixed castor oil and polypropylene glycol (60:40); an activator mixture of endoethylene piperazine, N-methyl-N1-di-methylamino ethylpiperazine, tin-(II)-octoate, polysiloxane-polyalkylene oxide copolymer; water; and toluylene diisocyanate, the components being supplied to the mixing chamber of a nozzle-type apparatus. In other examples there are used mixtures of castor oil with propoxylated ethylene diamine or propoxylated sorbitol, and alternative components of the reaction mixtures are dibutyl tin dilaurate, sodium castor oil sulphate, and diphenyl methane-4,41-diisocyanate.ALSO:A process for the production of foam materials comprises reacting together in one step at least one polyiscocyanate and a mixture of castor oil and one or more linear and/or branched polyethers in the presence of a blowing agent, the amount of castor oil being more than 50% by weight of the total weight of the polyether and the castor oil. As polyethers there may be used polymerization products of ethylene or propylene oxides or of tetrahydrofuran, if desired in admixture with polyhydric alcohols and/or amines. Addition products of alkylene oxides with such amines as ethylene diamine and diethylene triamine can also be used. In Example (1) a foam is prepared by reacting mixed castor oil and polypropylene glycol (60: 40); an activator mixture of endoethylene piperazine, N-methyl-N1-dimethyl-aminoethylpiperazine, tin (II)-octoate, polysiloxane-polyalkylene oxide copolymer; water; and toluylene diisocyanate, the components being supplied to the mixing chamber of a nozzle-type apparatus. In other examples there are used mixtures of castor oil with propoxylated ethylene diamine or propoxylated sorbitol, and alternative components of the reaction mixtures are dibutyl tin dilaurate, sodium castor oil sulphate, and diphenyl-methane-4, 41-diisocyanate.
