914,855. Advancing mine roof supports. GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE STERKRADE A.G. Jan. 8, 1960 [Jan. 8, 1959], No. 837/60. Class 20 (2). [Also in Group XXX] In a longwall mining installation, extensible buffers 7 are arranged between a row of pit-props 1 and a coal conveyer 6. As shown, a pair of telescopic buffers 7, operated by compressed air, are mounted on the base of an hydraulic pitprop 1 which is mechanically advanced by a ram 5 towards the coal face 8, and, by progressively extending, constantly urge a conveyer 6 against the coal face. When the prop 1 is advanced, the pressure exerted by the buffers is overcome and they collapse still maintaining constant pressure on the conveyer, an overpressure relief valve being provided for the escape of the compressed air. In other embodiments, the buffers may be hydraulically operated; or a compression spring may be used which slowly expands to urge the conveyer against the advancing coal-face, and is compressed when the prop 1 is advanced; the buffers may be mounted on the conveyer.
