Abstract

914,518. Cutting dies. JAGUAR CARS Ltd. Aug. 30, 1961, No. 31169/61. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XXII] In a die for sheet material, the cutting edges are formed by one edge of steel strips, the opposite edges of which abut a back-plate, the strips are inter-connected with members of a frame which, is also secured to the back-plate and surrounds and is spaced from the strips, and the channel formed between the frame, the strips and the back-plate is filled with a hard-setting resin to the level of the cutting-edges of the strips. The die comprises a back-plate 10, a frame of angle iron members 11, 12, 13 and 14 welded together as at 15, 17 and held to the back-plate by screws 16. Steel strips 18 to 27 which form the cutting edges are arranged in the desired form and are supported from the frame by struts 28 to 35 which are brazed or otherwise secured in position. The strips are welded together on the outside. The channel between the strips and the frame is filled with a hard-setting resin and preferably the die cavity is filled with resin to a level which will not impede the stroke of the punch. There are holes through the strips to bond the two fillings. The back-plate 10 and the outer filling can be provided with aligned holes for guiding an ejector. The coacting punch comprises a suitably profiled punch member and is secured by screws and dowels to a block of hard-setting resin which is similarly secured to a back-plate.
