Abstract

914,450. Lubricators &c. LORD MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 14, 1961 [Oct. 17, 1960], No.32960/61. Class 12 (3). A device for lubricating the journal 2 in a railway car journal box 1 comprises a polymethane sponge body 7 with an oil impervious skin 8 which forms a container or oil reservoir and is located in the journal box below the journal. A wick 10 with pad 11 bears with its upper end against the underside of said journal and its lower end 14 fits snugly into a cavity 9 in the sponge body 7. The sponge body does not obsorb the oil and its cellular form permits oil to flow at a restricted rate into moulded chambers 19 in either side of the cavity 9 to where the oil may collect in sufficient quantity for absorbtion by the wick as required. The skin 8 provides oil retaining means together with the snug fit of the wick in the cavity 9 prevents loss of oil when the railway car may be inverted during a dumping operation. The oil level therein may be checked through a spout means or tube 20 integral with or cemented to the body 7. The resilient property of the sponge body provides pressure means to maintain said wicks in constant contact with the journal.
