Abstract

The electrical properties of vinyl chloride suspension polymers and copolymers are stated to be improved by a process in which either (a) they are washed with electrolyte-free water of conductivity less than 2 micro-Siemens-if polymerization has been effected in presence of a secondary alkyl sulphonate or a fatty acid/hydrolysed protein condensation product as emulsifier, or (b) if said emulsifier has not been used in polymerization, the polymers are pretreated with a water-soluble compound of a Group I-IV metal and/or said emulsifier in aqueous suspension prior to said washing. The Group I-IV metal compound is one that is known as an additive to polyvinyl chloride; specifically mentioned are alkaline earth metal oxides, hydroxides, acetates (e.g. of Mg or Pb), lactates and acetoacetates, especially of calcium, and alkali metal polymeta- and pyro-phosphates. Also mentioned are (i) polymer additives: titanium dioxide, tribasic lead sulphate, lead stearate and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate; (ii) polymerization ingredients: dilauryl peroxide, sodium diisopropyl- or diisobutyl-naphthalene sulphonate and polyvinylalcohol. Proprietary secondary alkyl sulphonates and fatty acid/protein condensates are specified.
