Abstract
914,350. Wire drawing; making wire. AJAX MANUFACTURING CO. June 9, 1961 [Sept. 6, 1960], No. 20896/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A wire-shaping and drawing apparatus comprises a frame having a guideway, a slide movable in said guideway, a grip device on said frame for gripping a wire being drawn, a drawing die on said slide for movement therewith through a drawing stroke in a direction away from said grip device, means acting on the slide to produce said drawing stroke and wireshaping means comprising pressure rolls on said slide defining a bight passage of non- circular cross-section, said rolls acting on the wire during said drawing stroke. The apparatus 10 is shown in Fig. 1, being used in conjunction with a machine 14, such as a cold header, to which the drawn wire 11a is supplied directly and at substantially the rate of production. Drawing section.-A draw die 13 is mounted on a slide 22 which moves in a guideway 21 formed at the top of a frame 20 and is moved through the drawing stroke by a rocking lever 23. A wedge-type grip 24 comprising blocks 25 and 26 is mounted on the frame. A supply of lubricant for the wire is contained in a chamber 36 formed in the slide 22. Shaping section.-Before entering the drawing die the wire is shaped to the required crosssection by a pair of rolls 72 and 73. The roll 72 has a plain cylindrical working surface and is mounted in bearings 74 carried by a bracket 80 which is attached to a slide 70. The lower roll 73 which supports the wire during the flattening thereof by the upper roll 72 is mounted on an eccentric portion 78 of a shaft 79 which is carried by the bracket 80. The roll pass is adjusted by rotating the shaft 79 and this is achieved by a lever 86 and a rod 87 which is threaded at its upper end and adjusted in a fixed bracket 91 by nuts 92 and 93. Wire-feeding means.-The wire is drawn through the apparatus after each drawing stroke by a pair of feed rolls 15 and 16, the upper roll 15 has a flat peripheral surface and the lower roll 16 has a groove therein corresponding to the shape of the wire. The rolls are driven through a one-way clutch 65, a lever arm 66 and a link 67 which is attached to an adjusting means 68 mounted on a lever 64 which is secured to the shaft 38. Slide-actuating means.-The rooking lever 23 is fixedly mounted on a shaft 38 journalled in bearings in the frame and the upper end of the lever is forked and engages thrust surfaces 42 on the slide 22, which may be rigidly connected to the slide 70 or may push it along during the drawing stroke. The return movement of the slides is effected by the wire as it is drawn through the apparatus and by a pair of springs 59. The lower end of the lever 23 is coupled by a connecting rod 44 with an eccentric portion 45 of a drive shaft 46 which is chain-driven from a source such as the driving means of the machine 14. It is stated that the close positioning of the various elements of the apparatus reduces the amount of twist which occurs when drawing wire of non-circular cross-section.
