Abstract

914,291. Lifting jacks. ROUSSEAU, J. J. Dec. 29, 1960 [Dec. 29, 1959], No. 44679/60. Class 78 (3). A casing 7, supporting a vehicle engaging arm 25, is raised on a column 1 by a hand lever 20 which is pivoted at 21 to the casing and which is provided with a roller 22 bearing on a plate 5 having an opening 6 of slightly greater diameter than the column, so that, on downward movement of the lever 20, the plate 5 wedges on the column and the casing 7 is raised. During this upward movement, a nut 4, engaging a helical thread 2 on the column, is urged upwardly, and thereby rotated, by a ball-bearing 10 on a washer 11 supported on the casing 7 at 12. When downward pressure is removed from the hand lever 20, the weight of the vehicle tends to cause the casing 7 to move down to bring a bearing face 14 on the casing into engagement with a lining 13, having a high coefficient of friction, on the nut 4, whereby the nut is prevented from rotating and remains stationary on the column. The plate 5 is then returned to the position shown, in relation to the casing 7, by a spring 18. To lower the jack, the nut 4 is rotated by rotating a bevel gear-wheel 16 which meshes with teeth 15 on the nut. In a modification, Fig. 3, the bearing 10 is resiliently mounted on a spring 28 supported on spacers 29, 30 on the casing 7 and when the casing is not urged upwardly, it rests on the nut 4 through the medium of a ring 31 having a high coefficient of friction. A toothed ring 32 is provided on the base of the nut 4 and is normally engaged by a ratchet device 37 which prevents rotation of the nut in the downward direction. The ratchet device 37 is mounted on a forked lever 33, which is pivoted at 34 on the casing 7, and is disengaged from the ring 32 by depressing a head 41 on a shaft 39 rotatably supported by the lever 33 and thereby engaging a pinion 40 with the ring 32 so that on rotation of the head 41, the nut 4 is rotated and lowered. In both embodiments, the loadsupporting arm pivots down to the dotted position when not in use.
