Abstract

914,069. Dictating apparatus; back-spacing. DICTAPHONE CORPORATION. June 17, 1959 [June 27, 1958], No. 20813/59. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XXXIX] To prevent back-spacing extending beyond the current recorded message, a distinctive change of signal is produced on the record at the end of each message, and back-spacing is arranged to be stopped whenever this change of signal is encountered. As shown, a dictator at a substation 10 may record a message on track 22a of tape 22 by means of recording amplifier 36 and message head 28. The end of a message is indicated on a second track 22b by a 100 c/s. pulse, produced by generator 48 in response to operation of push-button 16 by the dictator or to replacement of a hand-set and recorded by means of tabulating head 30. During play-back or back-spacing, the machine is stopped when head 30 encounters one of these pulse signals, which also operate a counter 86. When back-spacing is stopped in this way, play-back is automatically initiated. The tape drive is as described in Specification 832,171, and a two-reel tape magazine as described in Specification 853,873 is used. Specification 865,014 also is referred to.
