Abstract
913,928. Nuclear fuel elements. YARROW & CO. Ltd. Aug. 5, 1960 [Aug. 11, 1959], No. 27485/59. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXII] A nuclear reactor fuel element comprises a can 1 made of thin gauge metal having a cylindrical wall formed with circumferential corrugations 5, e.g. helical corrugations, a series of disc-like pellets 4 of fissile material being housed in the can with the peripheral surfaces of the pellets having grooves into which the inwardly-extending portions of the corrugations of the can extend. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the tips 6 and roots 7 of the helical grooves of the pellets are cut back so as to provide spaces between them and the adjacent parts of the corrugations 5 of the can for fission product gases. In an alternative embodiment, the can has originally a plane cylindrical wall but the pellets inserted therein are formed with annular concentric grooves on their peripheral walls and the can wall is swaged or otherwise operated on so as to fit these grooves, spaces being left between the bottoms of the grooves in the can wall and those in the pellets for fission product gases and for preventing the pellets from being subjected to radial pressure during the swaging operation. The cans 1 may be made of stainless steel or a suitable alloy or sintered compact, e.g. an alloy or compact having a zirconium or aluminium base. As illustrated in Fig. 6, the cans 1 may be connected in clusters by means of metal braces or bars 8 such that, when housed in a suitable container, liquid such as water or a polyphenyl is readily circulated round the cans. The braces or bars 8 are brazed or welded to the walls of the cans and to prevent the formation of " hot spots " at the joints, pellets of inert non-fissile material such as magnesia are provided under them in place of the pellets 4 of fissile material.
