Abstract
Alkylbenzenes are obtained by condensing with benzene, in the presence of an alkylation catalyst, a copolymer fraction boiling in the C9-C18 range obtained by copolymerizing any two or all of ethylene, propylene and n-butylene in the presence of a transition metal oxide. Propylene is preferably present in the polymerization feed in amounts of 50-90% mol and ethylene in amounts of not more than 35%. Alkanes may be present but isobutene should be absent. Suitable catalysts are oxides of nickel, cobalt and manganese which may be supported on silica, silica gel or silica-alumina, and polymerization is effected at 20-150 DEG C. under sufficient pressure to maintain the liquid phase. The product is fractionated and low boiling material recycled. Alkylation may be effected at -20 to 50 DEG C. in the presence of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, and the alkylate fractionated into light, detergent and heavy alkylate fractions.
