Abstract

913,111. Variable resistors. EGEN ELECTRIC Ltd., and BOWMAN, A. Dec. 17, 1959 [Jan. 16, 1959], No. 1605/59. Class 37. A variable resistor comprises a contact maker caused to slide over a resistance element by a rotatable shaft and connected to a fixed terminal by a flexible band. The electrical elements are contained within the casing 1 having a recess 2, Figs. 1 and 3, with bearings 3 for an actuating shaft 4 keyed at 5 to an insulating boss 6, such that the boss may be rotated within limits afforded by the stop 7. A resistance element 8 preferably consisting of a carbon track on an insulating base is mounted against one wall of the easing. Inside the casing a resilient band 10 of spring steel or the like of arcuate cross-section is anchored to a fixed terminal 11 and the other end carries a contact maker 12 engaging the track 9. The band 10 has a folded-back portion entrapped within the boss 6, such that rotation of the boss causes the contact maker to slide along the track, pressure being maintained between the contactor and track as the concave portion of the arcuate band 10 faces the track. If additional pressure is required a resilient protuberance could be provided on the band above the contact 12 and bearing against the wedge-shaped projection on the casing 1, Fig. 1. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the resilient band 41 has no folded back portion, but has a series of perforations which engage projections on the boss 6.
