Abstract

1,111,870. Variable resistor. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. 14 Dec., 1965 [21 Dec., 1964], No. 52949/65. Heading H1S. A miniature potentiometer or variable resistor with an arcuate resistance element 24 which may be a cermet, has a rotor 18, journalled in an aperture 12 in a housing 10 and carrying a contact plate 20 (of platinum or platinumpalladium), secured by projections which dig into the rotor, in its cup-shaped lower part. Resilient sealing means 56 force the rotor into contact with base-plate 22, so that the spacing of contact-plate 20 from resistance element 24 and the pressure with which resilient fingers extending from and integral with the contact plate 20 bear on the resistance element 24 and collector plate 26 remain constant. The contact finger which bears on collector plate 26 (50 in Fig. 4) may have a pimple (52 in Fig. 4) on it to give a low-friction contact and be offset from the axis of rotation to reduce wear, and the finger (44 in Fig. 4) which bears on the resistance element may be bifurcated. The insulating base 22 is cemented in place in such a position that resilient sealing 0-ring 56 is slightly compressed. After the contact plate 20 is inserted into the rotor the rotor may be post-cured to cause it to shrink slightly.
