Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0912896/IV (b)/1> where A represents a single valence bond, an oxygen or sulphur atom or a sulphinyl, sulphonyl, methylene, ethylene, a ,b -diethylethylene, vinylene or a ,b - diethyl-vinylene group; R represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom or a methyl, hydroxy, methoxy or COCHX2 group and X represents chlorine or bromine. The compounds may be prepared by direct halogenation of the corresponding acetoxy compounds, preferably in a solvent such as acetic acid, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride or methylene chloride, or by a Friedel-Crafts reaction using a dihaloacetyl halide. Extensive examples are given of the preparation of dichloro- and dibromo-acetyl compounds, mainly the 4 and 4,41-isomers. The compounds have bacteriostatic activity. 4-biphenylylgyoxal is prepared by reacting 4-dichloroacetyl-biphenyl with sodium methoxide and acidifying the resulting 4-biphenylylglyoxal methyl acetal
