Abstract

912,853. Ironing presses. McGRAW-EDISON CO. May 10, 1961 [June 27, 1960], No. 16973/61. Class 138 (2). In apressing-machine a buck unit 19 to hold a pair of trousers with the legs separated is mounted on a carriage 20 so as to be vertically movable between a dressing position (Fig. 1) and a pressing position between two pairs of pressing platens 16 (Fig. 3), and means 22, 26 (Fig. 2) are provided for pressing and clamping the fly and seat portions of the trousers respectively; means 27, 28 (Figs 2, 9) are also provided to produce a crease in the front and rear of each trouser leg. The buck unit 19 includes leg extenders 77 (Figs. 2, 9) which are moved downwards between plates 74 during a pressing operation to tauten each trouser leg. The buck unit also includes a V-shaped buck (Fig. 7, not shown) which engages with a heated pressing platen 106 of similar shape forming part of means 22, and has a fabric closure 62 which is inflated with hot air or steam supplied through a conduit 64 when the buck unit is in the pressing position. The means 26 for pressing the seat of the trousers includes an inverted V-shaped platen 126 (Fig. 2) similar to platen 106, its pressing position being shown in broken lines. Each pair of pressing platens 16 comprises an outer platen 40 and a shorter inner platen 41 which are pivoted on rollers 44 and coupled to springs 48, 53. Each platen is heated by a hot air or steam chest 42 (Fig. 9), and has an insulating backing 45 (Fig. 3). The platens are moved into a pressing position againt the pull of the springs 48 (Fig. 3), by rubber bags 56, 57, inflated with compressed air. The means 27 for creasing the front of each trouser leg comprise a flexible metal shoe backed with springs 133 (Fig. 9). The corresponding means 28 for creasing the back of each trouser leg may comprise somewhat similar pairs of flexible metal shoes or pads 157 mounted on spring-biased slides 161 coupled by links 164 to a notched member (Fig. 8, not shown) at one end of the platens 40, 41 which engages with a crease 158 in the trouser leg whereby the pads 157 take up a position to suit the width of the trouser leg; a similar device is arranged at the opposite end of the platens 40, 41 (Figs. 12, 13, 14, not shown). Alternatively, the means 28 may comprise a pair of bars 136 (Fig. 2) each having a bevelled edge 139 which engages with a bight in the corresponding trouser leg to provide a creasing face 142, the bars being moved into a creasing position from the position shown, Fig. 2, by a pair of compressed air motors 137 and 138 (not shown). ). The buck unit 19 is lowered into the pressing position by a further compressed air motor 96 against the action of a spring 101; similar motors are used to actuate the pressing means 22 and 26, and to operate an arm 144 (Fig. 1) for locking the carriage 20 in the pressing position.
