An evacuated and partly liquid-filled container 22 for an electric heating coil 23 has an upper wall 24 forming the base of a sheet metal water container 2 and a lower wall 25 forming a pressure-sensitive diaphragm actuating a cut-off switch 26. As shown, a glass beverage container 5 seats via a seal 20 on the container 2 and has a handle (not shown), a spout 6, a lid 8, a spray distributer 9 and a filter insert 10 for coffee powder through which water is passed from the container 2 via a pipe 13, pressed down against a spring 17 on raising a handle 15 of a retaining yoke 4, in which the tube runs, so that a bore 13b coacts with an insert entry pipe 12. Seals 18, 19 are provided. There is a pressure-equalizing bore 13c, which may be covered by a leaf spring 21, and steam outlets 31.
