Abstract
912,187. Magnetic recording - apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and SMITH, C. S. Sept. 21, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960], No. 32429/60. Class 40 (2). A multiple-track magnetic transducer unit has pairs of polepieces corresponding to a plurality of parallel tracks on a record medium, and a head winding unit which is movable to bring it into alignment with a desired pair of polepieces according to which track it is desired to utilize. The said head unit comprises a core member 21, Fig. 2, surrounded by a winding 22 and mounted on the end of a sliding rod 20, the core member being held against the polepieces by a leaf-spring 27 engaging two upright rods 28, 29. The polepieces are mounted in a solid block of moulding material so that the whole presents a smooth surface to the sliding head unit. Fig. 4 shows an alternative arrangement in which a head unit slides along a single rod 32 and may be moved out of engagement for resetting by a lever 50 which is located in each of its different settings by notches formed between projections 55 on a scale 56. In this embodiment the core members are provided with oblique surfaces to ensure maximum amount of contact therebetween. A further embodiment describes the use of a lead-screw for moving the head unit either manually or by means of an electric motor.
