Abstract

911,856. Adjusting steering columns. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. May 19, 1961 [May 27, 1960], No. 18293/61. Class 79(5). The steering column of a vehicle, especially a sports car, is pivoted by brackets 25, 26 to the vehicle bulkhead, the steering shaft. equipped with a steering wheel 11 and conventional steering box 29, being provided with a universal joint 28. The arrangement enables the steering wheel to be moved to one side to enable the driver to enter the vehicle. Along the length of the column, a bracket 43 is affixed by a strap 46 and is bolted to a hanger 32 having a nylon bearing piece 45 which slides between the arcuate flanges 31, 34 of a support member 33 secured to the bulkhead by a U bracket 37, there being a stop member 39 at one end and a centring spring-loaded pawl 54 (Fig. 5) at the other. The pawl 54 engages within a slot in the hanger member 32 and bearing piece 45. A solenoid 68 controls the position of a locking pin 69 and is in a circuit, Fig. 6, which includes the vehicle ignition switch 75, a switch 72 at the outboard limit of travel of the hanger member 32 and a switch 78 operated by the vehicle transmission which is of the automatic type. The arrangement is such that the solenoid is withdrawn to enable movement of the column when the transmission is in the "park" position whether the engine is running or not and if the column is not centred, the engine is cut out when the transmission lever is moved out of the "park" position. In a modification, Fig. 8, for use with a gear lever disposed on the steering column, a mechanical locking device is employed, comprising an arcuate member 94 fixed to the gearshift shaft by a bracket 85 and which extends through slots 92 and 91 in a flanged bracket 88 secured to the steering column and the arcuate hanger track 87, respectively, only in the normal postion of the column. The member 94 is clear of the guide track in the "park" position but remains through the slots in the engaged positions of the gears.
