Abstract

In the automatic control of a motor vehicle friction clutch (1), the clutch is disengaged when the vehicle is stationary and thus, despite the fact that the engine (3) is running and the gear is engaged, the driver can leave the vehicle. In the case of a fault of the clutch system causing engagement of the clutch, the vehicle may set itself in motion. This is prevented by an arrangement in which, when the clutch (1) is engaged with the vehicle stationary, with the engine (3) running and the gear engaged, the brake pedal (21) must be actuated substantially continuously. If during a predetermined time period of for example two seconds at maximum the brake pedal (21) is not actuated, then the engine (3) is shut off or the change- speed gear (5) is set into its neutral position. <IMAGE>
